Big Potato are now a certified B Corp. Woohoooo!!

@bigpotatogames Have any questions about what a B Corp is/ what it all means? We're here to help! #bcorp #bcorpmonth ♬ Bright, heartwarming, girly music(1307059) - nue

What is a B Corp?

The concept of a B Corp was created by B Lab, a non-profit network with a mission to transform the global economy to benefit all people, communities, and the planet.

They believe the most challenging problems facing people and the planet cannot be solved by governments and charities alone - and we must also use business as a force for good.

Certified B Corporations, or B Corps, are companies verified by B Lab to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.

To become a Certified B Corporation, the B Corp crew scrutinises every part of a business across five key areas: Governance, Environment, Workers, Community and Customers.

A company must achieve a minimum of 80 points in the B Impact Assessment to become B Corp Certified, and Big Potato scored 99.5!

In a nutshell, this means that Big Potato meets high standards of social and environmental impact.

It is a globally recognised certification - as of March 2024, there are 8,250 certified B Corporations across 162 industries in over 200 countries. Check em out!

Oh and in case you were wondering, the B stands for “Benefit for all”. Who knew.

What are Big Potato actually doing to score so highly?

WE PRIORITISE THE ENVIRONMENT

  • Our boxes are made from 100% pulp

  • Our rules and cards are made from woodland that’s responsibly grown and looked after

  • The stickers which seal our games are made from plants not plastic

  • 95% of all our games are free of single-use plastic

  • 75% of our new games are 95% recyclable

  • In 2023, we offset over 700 tonnes of carbon

WE LOOK AFTER OUR EMPLOYEES

  • Fair pay

  • 4-day working week

  • External HR Department

  • Flexible working 1 day a week & a dog-friendly office

  • 16 days of annual leave & office closed over Christmas

  • Pension contributions

  • Bupa mental health support

  • Socials at least once a month

  • Gym discounts, yoga, massages and more!

WE SEEK TO POSITIVELY IMPACT OUR CUSTOMER’S LIVES

  • We create products with the aim of bringing joy to people: whether it's helping families bond at Christmas time, helping students break the ice at university, or making a night in for one feel a little less lonely.

  • We try to make our games colour vision deficiency-friendly where possible so as not to exclude anyone from our games.

WE GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

  • Since the beginning of 2022 we've donated over 1000 games to 350+ charities.

WE VALUE GOOD GOVERNANCE

  • In doing the B Corp certification, we have committed to being transparent.

  • We have policies covering shared parental leave, business ethics, sabbaticals, grievance, bereavement, whilstleblowing and more.

WE ARE STILL LOOKING TO IMPROVE

  • Being a B Corp is a journey, not a destination.

  • The improvements won’t stop here now that we’re certified.

  • We’re still not perfect and this is just the start for us.

  • We want to priortise people and the planet even more going forward - making less and less games from single-use materials, improving our supply chain practices, and reducing our carbon emissions further.

But when you’re buying from a Certified B Corp (read: Big Potato!) you can rest assured that your money is supporting a business that prioritises purpose as well as profit.
